A Guide to Tendonitis

Tendonitis is a common injury among athletes and occurs when the tendons in your body become inflamed. Tendons are the cords of tissue that connect the muscle to the bone. Tendonitis can cause immense pain, swelling, and discomfort which can either be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). If this happens, it is important to consult with a medical professional to ensure that your health regresses back to the normal standards with appropriate treatment.

The cause of tendonitis is mostly unknown, however it is commonly found in athletes. Patterns show that tendonitis can occur due to strain, or overuse. Tendonitis usually occurs in areas such as the elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, and achilles tendon.

Not all injuries from tendonitis come in the same form, therefore they are categorized into different types which include: lateral epicondylitis, medial epicondylitis, and rotator cuff tendonitis (there are other types, but they are very similar these main three).

First, lateral epicondylitis, known as “tennis elbow”, causes pain along the backside of the elbow and forearm. Similar to lateral epicondylitis, medial epicondylitis targets the elbow and is often called “baseball elbow”, causing pain from the elbow to wrist on the palm side of the forearm. Finally, rotator cuff tendonitis is known as biceps tendonitis and is a shoulder disorder due to the fact that it causes inflammation in the shoulder capsule and nearby tendons.

Furthermore, many symptoms come along with tendonitis, which are important to recognize and mention while seeing a medical professional to get diagnosed. The most noticeable symptom in many cases of tendonitis is inflammation which eventually leads to pain without treatment. Another is pain in a specific area of the tendon which usually spreads to other areas. Finally, a very distinct symptom of tendonitis is a grated feeling while moving the joint. Some of these symptoms may be a general health problem, so it is important to see a medical profession either way.

In many cases, if you are diagnosed with tendonitis, the treatment period will be focused towards your strong recovery and health. Many treatment solutions may include: changing your everyday activities, routinely icing to prevent more inflammation and pain, using a splint to limit movement, and medication to help kill pain and inflammation. Although it is usually not common, some severe cases of tendonitis surgery is required for the well being and health of your body.

Tendonitis is a serious and common injury in many athletes and it is important to recuperate before returning to your activities. Taking care of your body is a top priority and you should respect it entirely. To try and prevent future cases of tendonitis, always wear the proper gear when exercising and get a proper dynamic warm up with stretching. In addition, you know your body more than anyone else, so after sensing if something is wrong, seeing a medical professional who can help you solve the problem is imperative.

According to Bella Bleue, “Your body holds deep wisdom. Trust in it. Learn from it. Nourish it. Watch your life transform and be healthy.”
